ALERT: Motion to Proceed Passes

25 Jul 2017

Disability Flag50 Senators have voted to proceed on a mystery healthcare bill, and VP Pence broke the tie. John McCain, who has the greatest healthcare taxpayers can buy, returned to vote “YES” on a motion to proceed after surgery to remove a brain tumor. The proposed bills, whichever one they eventually vote to pass, will take healthcare away from millions of the most vulnerable Americans.

After much talk from several Republican Senators about “concerns,” only two stuck to their words, with only Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Sen. Susan Collins voted “NO.” Senators Capito (R-WV), Heller (R-NV), Paul (R-KY), Moran (R-KS), Flake (R-AZ), Johnson (R-WI) capitulated to Senate Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), big-money donors and a President who thinks health insurance costs $12/year.

There have been no hearings, no debate, no interviews with stakeholders and no input outside of 13 male Republican Senators in  secret. The proposed plan(s) are currently polling in the mid-teens. Doctors oppose, hospitals oppose, healthcare policy experts oppose, disability rights groups oppose, senior groups oppose, and even insurers oppose. Seemingly, the only group in favor are the 51 people who voted to advance it today.

The chances of stopping a final bill is very slim, but we must fight to the end. Stay tuned.
