ALERT: Senate Healthcare Bill Revision is Unacceptable

13 Jul 2017

Senate Republicans have released a revision of their Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA), and the revisions do nothing to change our strong opposition to this bill. The new version throws some money at some issues that they believe will attract moderate holdouts. For the more conservative holdouts, the bill will allow insurers to offer bare-bones plans that will eliminate essential health benefits that are required under current law.

Even worse, the bill retains the most odious provisions of the original BCRA. If this bill is passed and signed into law, it will return us to an environment with out-of-control premiums and deductibles, while offering far fewer benefits. The original bill was bad because it harmed everyone but very healthy young adults and the wealthy. The new bill eliminates some of the planned cuts for the wealthy, but keeps all of the other bad parts. This comparison from the Center for Budget and Public Policy (CBPP) explain it more clearly:

Topher Spiro of the Center for American Progress (CAP) takes the red ink to the section of the bill related consumer protections and essential health benefits, the benefits that current law requires all healthcare plans provide:

The original bill was bad, and very little has been corrected in the revision. Some parts are worse, and it will set the stage for further Medicaid cuts down the road, eventually ending the program altogether. That has been the stated goal by some Republican members of congress, including Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and Ted Cruz, the Senator charged with escorting this bill through the upper chamber.

We await the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) score on the newest version, but experts believe there will be little change from the original BCRA.

It is possible that North Carolina Senators Burr and Tillis will vote for anything that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) tells them to, but because we believe in the good of others, we must continue to make them hear us. Maybe they will decide to put North Carolinians and all Americans over party. CLICK HERE for contact information.
