Congressional Baseball Shooting
14 Jun 2017
We want to express our sympathies to those who have been injured in this morning’s shooting at a Congressional baseball practice in Northern Virginia. Baseball, “The Great American Pastime” brings joy to so many, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, political affiliation or disability. It happens to be one of the few things that everyone can enjoy without the pressure of political partisanship getting in the way.
Our political discourse has become poisonous and we, American citizens, must take it upon ourselves to tamp down some of the violent rhetoric. That is not to say that we must be silent about the issues that affect our lives, our families’ lives or our nation’s well-being. We need to to understand that, no matter our differences on particular issues, we all have the same basic wants: to live and lead happy lives, to protect our families and to live in harmony.
So, continue to fight, rhetorically and with hard work, for the things that are important to you. Try to talk to those with disagreements, not past them. Try to listen more. Violence is never the answer. We are becoming too fragmented, as Americans and as world citizens. Let us unify over our nation’s mutual good, not be bogged down by the gamesmanship our of tribal politics.
Finally, we give our thanks to the Capitol Police, whose presence and bravery saved many lives. They unselfishly risked their lives for American lawmakers and citizens. We wish a speedy recovery to those who were wounded.
